Common Causes of Hip Pain in Runners & Athletes:

IT Band Syndrome

IT Band Syndrome is an overuse injury of the connective tissues in the outer part of the thigh, knee or hamstring. The hamstring muscles help to stabilize the back of the knee. Once overused, the IT Band needs to help out for stabilization. The IT Band is not in the ideal spot to help stabilize the knee and can become overused and inflamed. This is common in runners.

Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome is commonly used to describe pain near the hip or buttock. When the piriformis muscles get aggravated and painful, the result can be pain in the hip and buttock. However, most of the time, hip and buttock pain is actually caused by one or more adhesions between the sciatic nerve, and the smaller group of muscles close to the piriformis. A sciatic nerve entrapment is a very big deal, and without proper treatment, the problem can linger and possibly lead to other ailments.

Hip Impingement

Hip Impingement, or Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI), is a condition where there is increased friction during hip movements due to abnormal contact between the ball and socket of the hip joint. Excessive overuse in the hip joint can lead to cartilage damage and degeneration in the hip. Restoring proper range of motion by fixing adhesion in the hip muscles can help slow down this degenerative process. Activity modification may also be needed for slowing down this condition.

Hip Bursitis

Inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that provides a cushion for the hip joint, is an indicator of overuse of the muscles that attach to the hip joint.


As we age, years of wear and tear can add up. This is especially the case in the hip joint. When we overuse a joint the arthritis process can start, making the joint less flexible and painful.
